Position Overview:
The Food Preparation shift supports students and community members with access to freshly prepared food samples and meals. The Food Prep Volunteer shift directly supports our Joyful Food Markets by preparing and packaging food samples for our partner schools and community members. The Food Prep Volunteer shift at Maycroft directly supports McKenna's Wagon program by preparing and packing hot meals and sandwich bags for evening meal distribution.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow recipe directions and instructions
- Practice kitchen safety rules (washing hands, sanitizing, wearing gloves, closed-toe shoes, and hair net) at all times
- Basic knife skills (chopping, slicing, etc.) Use of kitchen appliances (blender, stove, oven, dehydrator, etc.)
- Portioning, packing, and storing food samples and meals
- Label all leftover ingredients and stored samples with “best by date” on them
- Ensure walk-in maintenance and organization per the staff’s directions
- Load van with food when necessary
- Kitchen clean-up
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Developed May Include:
- Basic kitchen skills: Working with various kitchen tools and equipment.
- Communication skills: Actively listening to staff members regarding kitchen protocols.
- Organizational skills: Ensuring all ingredients and kitchen supplies are in their correct place after use.
- Teamwork skills: Working with other volunteers and staff members to ensure the samples are made according to directions.
Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the assistant may be asked to stand for extended periods of time, comfortably lift 30 lbs., and maintain an active shift.
