At Martha’s Table, we warmly welcome our bilingual neighbors to join us as volunteers in our Healthy Markets! Your support is essential in creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all families, helping distribute fresh, nutritious food while we strengthen our community together.

Position Overview: 

The Martha's Table Market promotes healthy food access through no-cost grocery markets at our locations in Southeast and Northwest D.C. This position will support Martha’s Table’s Lobby Market Coordinator at our S.E. headquarters, The Commons, to complete essential set-up and operational tasks and ultimately ensure that community members have a joyful experience when picking up their groceries. 

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Lobby Market Coordinator with market set-up tasks, including setting up tables, baskets, and other supplies
  • Support unloading and organizing produce and dry goods deliveries from vendors
  • Ensure the market is stocked with grocery items throughout the market
  • Interact with community members in a front-facing role to provide excellent customer service 

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Developed May Include:

  • Interpersonal skills: Interacting with other volunteers and staff effectively to ensure a seamless market experience
  • Communication skills: Actively listening to other volunteers, staff, and community members when they communicate their needs
  • Problem-solving and time-management skills: Working in a fast-paced market environment to balance operational needs vs. the needs of the market. For example, if we are out of stock of a popular food item, but the line is very long.
  • Leadership skills: If necessary, delegate tasks to other volunteers so they can effectively support you
  • Organizational skills: Ensure food inventory and supplies are stocked neatly 

Working Description: 

While performing the duties of this job, the assistant may be asked to stand for extended periods of time, comfortably lift 30-50 lbs., and maintain an active shift.
