Position Overview:
To celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Martha's Table will be hosting a community-based day of service. The purpose of the day is to assist with community-based projects informed and led by our Ward 8 neighbors. Volunteers will meet at Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington to participate in a revitalization project. Samaritan Ministry's Anacostia Office (1345 U St SE, Washington DC 20020) supports neighbors facing life challenges to include poverty and homelessness by providing various services that include job readiness and adult basic education. Volunteer activities may include: cleaning and tidying up the space, building and arranging furniture, and hanging art and other decor.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support general household cleaning tasks, such as sweeping and mopping floors, wiping down walls, dusting services, etc.
- Assemble and organize various furniture.
- Support the lifting and arranging of some heavy items.
- Arrange decor, such as hanging curtains and/or paintings.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Developed May Include:
- Interpersonal skills: Interacting with other volunteers and staff effectively to ensure a seamless market experience
- Communication skills: Actively listening to other volunteers, staff, and community members when they communicate their needs
- Problem-solving and time-management skills: Working in a fast-paced market environment to balance operational needs vs. the needs of the market. For example, if we are out of stock of a popular food item, but the line is very long.
Working Description:
While performing the duties of this job, the assistant may be asked to stand for extended periods of time, comfortably lift 30-50 lbs., and maintain an active shift.
